What does an electrical installation cost?

Sockets/switches: 1,200-2,500 SEK each. New electrical panel: 15,000-40,000 SEK. Entirely new house wiring: 80,000-200,000 SEK (depending on size). ROT on labour. An authorized electrician is required.

Must I use an authorized electrician?

Yes, all fixed electrical installations require an authorized electrician under the Electrical Safety Act 2016:732. Private "DIY" is illegal and insurers do not cover damage from unauthorized installation.

How do I verify an electrician's authorization?

Elsäkerhetsverket provides a searchable database at elsakerhetsverket.se. Search by company name or registration number - it shows valid authorization. Always check before work begins.

What is a residual current device (RCD)?

A protective device that cuts the power on an earth fault (leakage to ground). Mandatory for sockets in wet rooms and outdoors. Recommended throughout the house. Standard 30 mA trip current.

How many sockets do I need?

Kitchen: 8-12. Living room: 8-10. Bedroom: 4-6. In general: install more than you think you need - adding later is expensive. Preferably dedicated circuits for high-power loads (stove, laundry, heat pump).

Can I replace light fixtures and switches myself?

Replacing light fixtures and existing switches/sockets is allowed for private individuals, provided you use the right equipment and take care. Anything beyond that (new installations, rerouted cables) requires an authorized electrician.

What is 3-phase vs 1-phase?

3-phase: 400 V, high capacity, required for stove, heat pump, EV charging. 1-phase: 230 V, standard sockets. Modern houses have 3-phase incoming supply. Older houses (1960s-70s) often have 1-phase; upgrade costs 30,000-80,000 SEK.

Which electrical panel should I have?

A modern panel with RCDs, miniature circuit breakers per group, and room for future expansion. Brands: ABB, Eaton, Hager. Sizing based on family size and load. The electrician calculates.

Can I install an EV charger myself?

No. EV chargers above 3.7 kW are fixed installations and require an authorized electrician. Often require a dedicated circuit and possibly 3-phase. Cost: 15,000-35,000 SEK including installation.

How often should the electrical panel be inspected?

No statutory interval for single-family homes, but when buying an older house an electrical test is recommended. An electrician can perform a "technical electrical inspection" for 3,000-8,000 SEK.

What is the IP rating (enclosure class)?
